“Just remember, she might be pint-sized, but she’s quite a woman.” The original surfer girl gets her own three-film DVD collection, dippy fun from a more innocent time. 1959’s Gidget made real surfers nauseated, but it’s a kicky movie with some great lounge-era lingo. Sandra Dee, perkiness personified, plays the curious teen who breaks the gender line in surfing. She’s also got the attention of surf-happy Moondoggie (James Darren) and the big Kahuna (Cliff Robertson), the latter the prototype of the surf bum who roams the globe in search of the endless summer. The film actually kicked off the great boom in surfing popularity (the Beach Boys and the Beach Party movies followed), much to the chagrin of purists. It was based on a novel by Frederick Kohner, who was inspired by his daughter’s experiences.
Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) puts Deborah Walley in the title role. She’s no Sandra Dee, but at least there are shots of Walley doing her own surfing stunts. The action’s in Waikiki, and Gidge is pursud by a confused Moondoggie and a famous dancer. They are played by James Darren and Michael Callan, and having the two 1960s male ingenus in the same movie suggests a weird collision of matter and anti-matter. The spark goes flat in Gidget Goes to Rome (1963), with yet another new actress (Cindy Carol) paired with a loyal James Darren. It’s closer to Three Coins in the Fountain than the sandy beaches of Malibu.
DVD caveat: none of the films is in widescreen. The sequls don’t suffer much, but the original Gidget was shot in CinemaScope, and the pan-and-scan approach hurts the summery look of the picture–even if it’s just Sandra Dee balancing in front of blu-screen waves. –Robert Horton

Peter Sellers’s third go-around as the prideful but bumbling Inspector Jacqus Clouseau is funny enough, but this 1975 Blake Edwards revival of the Sellers-Clouseau connection is a little weak in comparison to predecessors The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark (both made in 1964). Costar Christopher Plummer actually gets some of the most interesting screen time as a retired cat burglar whom Clouseau accuses of getting back into the business. (If it sounds like there might be a To Catch a Thief vibe mixed in here, you’re right.) Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau’s psychologically eroding boss, and Clouseau’s ritualistic collisions with valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) are great examples of Edwards’s delicious comic timing. –Tom Keogh

Made in 1975 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, Katie Tippel (”Katie the Streetwalker”) is a handsome period drama set in 19th-century Holland, based on a tru story. The second eldest daughter in a poor, Friesland family who move to Amsterdam, Katie (Moniqu Van de Ven) must find whatever work is going to make ends meet. She has already learnt to have no faith in her weak father. Now, as she enters a succession of jobs in which she experiences both exploitation and sexual harassment, she learns that men want her for only one thing. Duly, at the behest of her own mother, she enters prostitution. However, when she becomes model to an artist she is finally able to escape the poverty trap and ascend the social ladder, particularly when banker Hugo (Rutger Haur) takes her as his lover. All this is set against a backdrop of social foment as the workers’ impatience at poor social conditions increases.
Although director Verhoeven, as well as Haur and cinematographer Jan De Bont eventually became involved in mainstream American movies, Katie Tippel is very much of the European school of film-making, episodic and harsh in its depiction of everyday poverty. The dead puppy at the beginning definitely marks it as contrary to Hollywood’s near-zero canine mortality rate. The sexual scenes are graphic to the point of gratuitousness but always grimly non-titillating. Budgetary limits cramp some of the mass street scenes, but generally the film is beautifully shot and ageless in feel. A far cry, certainly from Showgirls, for which Verhoeven was later responsible. –David Stubbs
